History

The Festival of Faith, originally called “Music in the Church”, originated in 1990 out of a desire to allow the community to hear some of the beautiful and unusual sacred music that most church and temple choirs never have the opportunity to perform in public. Since the first performance at Northwoods Presbyterian Church, venues for the Festival have included the Martin Luther King Center for Non-Violent Social Change, Cannon Chapel at Emory University, and the Chamblee-Dunwoody United Methodist Church. A wide variety of sacred and multicultural choruses and instrumental ensembles have participated in these Festivals, including the Avondale-Patillo UMC Chancel Choir, the Shirim Chorale, Emory Presbyterian Chancel Choir, Wheat Street Baptist Church Combined Choir, and the Alleluia Ringers of Mountain Park.

A choral workshop for participants and the public was added to the Festival in 1994 with Dr. Ann Howard Jones (Associate Conductor for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus) as the guest conductor. The DeKalb Choral Guild continues to sponsor this biannual event, which has become and expression of different faiths through music.
